The National Historic Speed Club (“NHSC”) was founded in October 2023 with the aim of giving competitors with historic cars the opportunity to enjoy competing against other cars of a similar vintage, rather than the more modern vehicles they might find in other championships. Historic race cars are always popular at motorsport events, but are rarely seen competing in numbers at hillclimb and sprint events. NHSC aims to fill that gap, both from a competitor and also from a spectator point of view.
The Club is proud to have the support of a number of high profile motorsport individuals in pursuing these aims. Our Honorary President is John Fitzpatrick (British Saloon Car Champion and winner of many other international championships in the 60s and 70s), Christopher Tate (MSUK Council member), Don Wales CBE (land speed record holder), Mike Cooper (son of John Cooper) and Philip Porter (motorsport author and publisher)
Hillclimb and sprint venues, where spectators are encouraged to attend, do not always provide the information that spectators need to understand what is happening in the competition they are watching. With this concern in mind, NHSC is developing ways of improving the information available about its own competitors, their vehicles and the championship they compete in. For instance, each competitor is encouraged to place a display card on the windscreen of their car whilst in the paddock. This contains details of the general specification of the car and any competition history. A whiteboard, which is visible to spectators, is maintained showing the progress of competitors’ results during that day’s event and another shows competitors’ current position in the championship. If there is commentary at the event, the commentators are provided with a pack detailing the NHSC entries.
